Castlerigg Farm Camping And Caravan Site
5/5 stars review rating
We received a phone call to say due to flooding our booking for the site by the lake was cancelled so at short notice we ended up looking for another site. We weren't sure what to expect but arriving at Castlerigg Farm we received a warm welcome and some very friendly staff who showed us to our pitch.
It was dark when we arrived but the following morning we were amazed by the view from our caravan window. In the distance across the valley was Bassenthwaite Lake and the views of the surrounding mountains were spectacular. The facilities were clean, the small shop had everything we required and we enjoyed several meals at the lovely Hayloft Cafe on site. One point to remember, there are 2 sites on the approach to this site, Castlerigg Farm is on the left just past the entrance to the other site.
We will definitely use this site again and can happily recommend it.

If you enjoy being insulted and threatened by a rude and ignorant owner who hates tourists then this is the place to go. While looking for a campsite for the week we drove onto this site and made the mistake of letting our seven year old son use the loo. The owner called us thieves and became insulting, racist and threatening. When my wife got out to fetch our son from the loo he climbed into the car and challenged me to a fight! I am still thinking of reporting this guy to the police and am certainly going to report him to the Tourist Board. He obviously hates tourists and should be doing something else. It explains why the site was half empty when everywhere else was full.

NOTE VERY WELL: Toilet and washing facilities are filthy and appallingly inadequate for the number of people on site, one toilet one small bathroom sink, plus an utterly disgusting COLD shower, all on one room on the back of a run down property, hence NO wash up facility unless you want to rinse a mug in a bathroom sink - one used by a dozen plus people... AND if someone is in the shower or having a wash here is NO access to a loo as it is in the same room! The 'facilities room' looks like it was installed in late 1970s and last cleaned in late 1980s (pictures are available!). Additionally, Hot water is provided once a day, with the owner saying 'when it runs out, tough' or 'pay us a pound and give us an hour and we will put the immersion heater on' - which assumes someone else will not use it first! not helpful to say the least. Basically, assume *cold* showers and washing up on the grass with a hose pipe.
The area nearby / teign valley is beautiful, but the location in middle of nowhere an *extremely* narrow lane typical of the area (7 feet wide?) - during our stay one person had to go elsewhere as it was impossible for them to turn/access/get into the field on offer. the (mildly eccentric, and aged)owner seemed most put out they didnt stay... and was keen for us to pay the moment we arrived, before we saw the facilities I guess...
Overall, *PLEASE* choose somewhere else even if it is more money, it will definitely be worth it.
